"Edgar's approach is refreshingly different. He listens to the concerns of our communities, empathizes with their struggles, and works tirelessly to find practical solutions that address their needs." Sharon Bronson - Former District 3 Supervisor
At our Campaign Kick-Off Event I was joined by Mrs. Rudy Gallego to tell the story of why I am stepping up to serve Pima County.
I had an experience that inspired me to serve our community. Our family friend, Rudy Gallego, passed away, and I was given the honor of delivering his eulogy. Rudy was a 74-year-old veteran of the United States Marine Corps who lost his legs and three fingers in Vietnam after stepping on a landmine. He was well-known in Tucson for his volunteer work on the Westside.
During Rudy's eulogy, I realized the paramount importance of serving others. Rudy's achievements as a United States Marine, baseball coach, and champion wheelchair athlete were impressive, but his unwavering commitment to helping others was his most admirable quality. His story is a powerful testimony to the transformational impact of selfless service.
During Rudy's service, this notion of service became even more profound. After the service, his son shared a story about MY DAD, Edgardo Soto (also a Marine), who passed away 17 years ago. Due to his limited mobility, Western Little League had denied Rudy's request to coach. My dad recognized that Rudy's assets far exceeded his level of mobility. He recruited other parents, and they brought their message of inclusivity and asset-based understanding to Western's Board of Directors, who then reversed their decision and allowed Rudy to coach.
These two men taught me to see the good in people, advocate for what is right, and develop a deep-seated commitment to serving and caring for our community and neighbors all over Pima County.
I am inspired by the legacy of two men who dedicated their lives to pure service. As I take on the role of Pima County Supervisor for District 3, I desire to help others thrive and see our community flourish. This commitment to service is at the core of my values and guides my every action. By serving in this capacity, I hope to honor the memories of these two great men, as well as those of my family and friends.
